This diagram shows the New Product Development process used by lean companies. Like every thing lean, the NPD process is almost the opposite of traditional product development. The NPD time makes several different designs for the product - often by different design teams - prior to defining the specification of the product. The multiple designs are based on customer needs, not customer specifications. While this seems counter intuitive, it results in better & more valuable products, more satisfied customers, quicker & more reliable deliver, and LOWER COSTS.
