The simplest definition of facilitation might be ”Using a person or persons (not becoming involved in the content of a discussion), to assist a group to meet its objectives by providing effective processes and structures for the group to follow”. The distinction between content and process is often, unfortunately, far from clear. It should be as clear as crystal. An effective facilitator remains in the facilitation role all of the time. A consultant can alternate between the two, provided that he/she is clear to the group about their role at any one time.
